CLIMATE CHANGE – A CRISIS "BIGGER THAN COVID 19"

The FCCJ's new Deep Dive Series offers the in-depth perspectives of leading experts from Japan and around the world on the key business and social issues of our time.

Climate change is fast coming to be seen as enemy number one for our planet and its inhabitants. IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva has warned that, "As we aim to exit the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis it has triggered we must face a greater threat - that of a changing climate." It is "a fundamental risk to economic and financial stability," she added.

The US, the EU, China, Japan and others have committed to stricter targets on carbon reduction after the world recorded its hottest year in 2020 and as global warming triggers an alarming rise in disasters like floods, fires, droughts and hurricanes.

Yet, for all the stepped-up action, the path toward preventing irreversible climate change is still far from clear.

Critical questions include: who will coordinate myriad country and regional actions needed to avert a climate disaster, how much will it cost to implement a global rescue "plan" and who will pay for it, especially with regard to contributions from governments, taxpayers, business firms and private investors?

Our distinguished panel on February 10 will address these and other questions.

  • Sonja Gibbs, Managing Director and Head of Sustainable Finance at the Institute of International Finance, Washington
  • Woochong Um, Director General of the Asian Development Bank's Sustainable Development and Climate Change Department, Manila.
  • Florence Jaumotte, Deputy Division Chief in the Research Department, International Monetary Fund, Washington.
  • Frank Belitz, Principal Officer, Strategy and Policy Department, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Beijing

This is an opportunity for you to hear their views and ask the so-far-unanswered questions.

A follow up event later in February will focus specifically on how Japan is confronting the challenge of climate change, featuring another panel of high-level experts. Details forthcoming.

No breakfast will be served on this occasion (owing to the Covid 19 pandemic); those attending in person are welcome to bring their own coffee (preferably in a recyclable container)
